Universal Credit - First Meeting at Jobcentre -What to expect was created by Jane52
Hello
Have been given date of first appointment at job centre as just migrated over to universal credit from tax credits. Also claim pip.
Am self employed. I think they are wanting to me to prove I make enough profit from my self employment , evidence it with marketing, receipts, payments from companies etc, tax returns, payments into private pension. Has anyone working had one of these first meetings? Also does anyone know if
1)DWP will want to keep evidence I bring, as I will need it for my tax return next year
2)If they then want to see you every month and, if so, is there a way of organising appointments so it does not clash with client work
3)As UC is linked to the DWP, is there going to be monitoring from a pip perspective too e.g. how well I walk , do I come alone or with someone else etc. even though this is not a pip interview.

I have approved your post so that it appears on the forum and I am hoping that our Members will be able to share their experiences with you.
Regarding your PIP application I would be most surprised if there is any active monitoring of you, the work coaches have more than enough to do without adding spying to their list. However, if you were to declare to them that you would love to seek work as a circus acrobat that might go into your records and could potentially be a link to your PIP claim if gets as far as a Tribunal.

I did have to go to tribunal for Pip. Applying for Pip was a horrible process, apart from tribunal stage. - successful thanks to the valued advice and support from your organisation. Due to this I have little trust in things linked to the DWP. I will stay professional and focused when I go to meeting, just wondered if anyone had already been to one of these first meetings with the job centre re universal credit.

When you see your work coach, they will ask you to sign a claimant commitment, signing of the claimant commitment starts your UC claim.
The conditions for claiming Universal Credit are set out in a "claimant commitment" that most people will have to accept at the beginning of their claim. If you are part of a couple, you will each have a separate claimant commitment that may be different from each other's.
People who may not need to accept a commitment include those who lack capacity, those who have exceptional circumstances where it would be unreasonable to expect them to agree a commitment (this is decided by the work coach on a case by case basis), or, From 15 February 2022 people with a terminal illness and less than 6 months to live were also excluded, and from 4 April 2023 this was extended to 12 months. There are 4 conditionality groups:
* Group 1. No work related requirements
* Group 2. Work-focused interview requirement
* Group 3. Work preparation requirement
* Group 4. All work-related requirements
