Esa letter. was created by claire
Hi , I wonder if anyone can help. I migrated over from IR ESA support group to UC couple of weeks ago, all went smoothly so far. Last week I had another Claimant Commitment to accept and when I queried this on my Journal I was told “As you was in ESA support group the Limited capability for work and work-related activity decision has been added to your claim. This has generated for Commitments to be accepted. These are in your to do list, please accept them.” Which I did. Today I received a letter saying your contribution based ESA will change to New style ESA on 30/10/24 and proceeds to say that they will contact me to book an appointment I must attend , your work coach will explain what you need to do to get New Style ESA and they will create an agreement with you called a Claimant Commitment which I must accept etc. Any clues as to what it’s for? It says my contribution based will change to new style. I was on Income related support group migrated to UC not contribution based. I have already “signed “ 2 claimant commitments on the journal and had interview with work coach. I’m wondering if my letter could be to do with the second claimant commitment ( mentioned above)I had to do coincidentally same date as the letter or if it’s a completely separate thing. I have put a message on my journal but wondered if anyone else has encountered this or knows what it means? TIA

Hi claire,

Your UC Migration is going correctly from what you are saying . Your old contribution based ESA is changing to New Style ESA which is effectively the same thing. However for political reasons a few years ago the Tory government wanted to get rid of the concept of " Benefit Entitlement " and wanted to replace it with a " contract "". This is called the Claimant Commitment which varies according to your personal employment situation. As you have been found unfit for work you only have to sign the " basic " Clamaint Commitment which just says you will notify the DWP of any changes. With UC most people sign the Claimant Commitment by clicking the green Accept button on their UC account. But for New Style ESA most people have to attend the Jobcentre to do this. It's just the way the DWP have organised things.

Sorry to nosey in, but I have had the exact same letter! I was on income related ESA support group and had the same letter stating I would be on contribution based. I telephoned DWP advising them I was in the process of migrating to UC and had already signed the commitments etc but more importantly, to tell them they had made a mistake saying I was on contribution based ESA when I was in fact on income related ESA. The woman on the telephone told me I had been moved onto contribution based due to my ‘past work NI contribution stamps’ being up to date even though I haven’t been able to work for the last five years or so. She then said I will lose out on money each month and that she can’t tell me how much I will have to wait until my UC is worked out, but that I can still receive my ESA fortnightly is I so wish? I told her I thought the whole point of UC was to make things into one monthly payment but she claimed I was able to still be paid my ESA fortnightly is I want to. I am so confused and worried by the whole contribution based thing?

Hi spaceinvader,

It sounds as if you have an old style contributions based ESA claim and were receiving top ups of income based ESA. So that with Managed Migration the old conts ESA becomes New Style ESA and the income based ESA is stopped and replaced with UC. Have you tried phoning the Citizens Advice Help to Claim phone number which should be on page 2 of your Managed Migration letter?
