UC paper application and letters was created by Twentyfold
Please can I ask regarding the application for UC, when migrating from ‘old style’ benefits.
Having read the guides here, it mentions that the application is now only made ‘online’ ie, digitally via a computer. The guides have mentioned that an ‘online journal’ then becomes the way to correspond with the DWP about the claim. It appears that no paper application forms are available anymore, and paper letters of correspondence will cease.
Please can you confirm, is this correct? That no paper application forms for UC, are available from now? And is it true that no more paper and envelope postal letters will be sent out, to communicate about claims? It seems only a telephone application could be made a last resort. This seems absolutely absurd to be be forced into having to use digital means only. What if a disabled claimant, or a person (for whatever reason) cannot use a computer, or doesn’t have access to a computer or the means to use one? Or doesn’t have the means to take and keep ‘screenshots’ of the journal, etc, as suggested? Can a paper application form and correspondence still be requested? As I’m sure many people will still prefer or need to use traditional forms and letters. Many thanks.

Hi Twentyfold,
You ask the following questions " What if a disabled claimant, or a person (for whatever reason) cannot use a computer, or doesn’t have access to a computer or the means to use one? Or doesn’t have the means to take and keep ‘screenshots’ of the journal, etc, as suggested?" and "That no paper application forms for UC, are available from now?"
Universal Credit was designed for use on a smart phone. If a disabled claimant is unable to use both a smart phone, tablet, lap top or computer then a UC phone only claim can be made with a standard telephone.
If the disabled person is housebound and without a telephone then a DWP Visiting Officer will attend their home and make the new UC claim with an official DWP mobile phone.
If the disabled person is not able to communicate at all then the DWP would ask for an appointee to be made to administer the UC claim. The appointee could be a person or a corporate appointee for instance an organisation such as HFT.
You are correct in that papers forms are no longer posted to claimants.
Hope this helps,
David

Thank you very much for your reply.
Can I ask, if you know why the decision was made to stop using paper application forms and letters of correspondence? Many thanks

Hi Twentyfold
One of the reasons to go digital by default is costs, post will not go missing, you should instantly get a receipt once you have completed your online application, for those claimants not able to go digital, there is a fall back position and as David as stated DWP do have visiting officers who can help.
