universal credit and renting was created by heelme
Hi, My daughter has just had her migration notice to universal credit and there is a question when asked about renting privately if she is renting from a relative or a company owned by a relative. The property she rents is now owned under her brother in laws company. The company in owned by three people not just him. she had originally rented the property back in 2011 but the landlord wanted to sell it. Her brother in laws business was looking for an investment so decided to buy the property from her old landlord. She is very ill so this was a lifeline for her! Everthing was transferred including the deposit, they did not sign a new agreement because it was based on the same agreement as before and they trust her. This has never been a problem before. I don't even remember being asked that question and if any proof of let is needed she has just had a letter confirming she rents from them. I feel like these people are trying to catch her out. I have never seen her in such a mess as she is right now. i am really angry they are forcing this migration and then making it all so complicated and stressful on people that are so ill clearly wanting to take money away from people .Please help. Thanks

Hi heelme,
A brother-in-law is not a " close relative " as far as UC Housing Costs are concerned. There should not be a problem for her once she has something in writing such as a letter to confirm her legal tenancy. Here is a link to the official guidance on renting and relatives.

Hope this helps,
