UC & savings was created by Oali
I have 2 queries about UC and how savings are taken into account.
The first is that i recently applied for UC, migration from ESA, and told them about a joint bank account I have with my mother. I informed them of the exact savings that are mine, in the account, via the journal. Do you think UC will accept that? Or will they argue that I have access to all the money? The amount in the account was almost £6000.
The second querie is also related to this.
Like I said, i opened a joint bank account with my mother back in 2021. My mother has been claiming UC for a few years but she forgot to tell them about this account. It was at the time of covid, I was unwell and we even had a covid related death in family, so you can understand she had a lot on her mind. It was a simple mistake. Should she tell them now? How? Will she be penalised? We can provide transactional history of the account, should we offer to? The main question is will they accept that only some of the savings were hers or will they argue its all hers?
Any help would be highly appreciated. Sorry for info dump.

Hi Oali
It depends on who paid the money into the account. If the total savings and investments are under £6000 there is nothing to worry about.
I don't think there is a need to inform the DWP at present unless there was a previous Compliance interest in the UC claim. Make sure you spend your money on the usual necessities so that the savings don't go over £6000. If your mother is approaching pension age my advice would be different.

Thankyou for your answer. The initial money going into the account was a cheque, she put money into my savings account and I wrote a cheque to deposit the money in the JA. It was covid times.
There have been periods where the joint amount was over £6000. But most of the transactions have been to and from my other account, so I can prove that the money was mine.
My mum is 56 so a bit far from retirement age. At the moment the account has less than 4000.

Hi Oali
Thanks for the update. Make sure you keep records and any statements, just in case you have a review which they are doing more of at the moment.

So from what I'm understanding I should inform them only if I recieve a compliance of interest request? Also to ensure from now on to keep the account total to below £6000? Is that all?
I have saved all statements should they be needed in future. Once again appreciate the advice.

Hi Oali
Yes try to keep the total from savings under £6000. You are allowed to spend your savings on items you need and also on the occasional luxury such as a foreign holiday.
