Don't know what to describe this as, overthinking or justifiable terror
The world has taken a dark road, forget all the "conspiracy" or not rhetoric. The government green paper about disability is Orwellian, I have to agree the benefit system is broken and I also agree that the younger folk that aren't working should be encouraged and helped with skill training as long as working will not be harmful to their wellbeing, and that’s all well and good.
The reality is rather more stark in the job market, geographical and social issues abundant. There are those who will attend interviews, if they can get that far, in dozens and not get work.
There are, and it does include me, those disabled folks over say 45 years of age, who's disability is such that being expected to work is simply unreasonable plus what I said about looking for work before also applies. I will just add, I served in the Royal Navy for 9 years in the 1980’s plus 5 years in reserve, and had been in full gainful employment until 2016. 2006, first diagnosed with the spine issues following a very painful collapse of my lumbar spine at work, 4 slipped discs in one go.
During MRI, the degeneration was evident as was my spinal cord tethering. Anyhoo, progressive, just to fill my days with extra joy.
Under the proposals in the green paper (greed paper), I would likely not qualify for PIP at all and they would expect me to seek employment. I have not worked for 20 years, I wonder, given my 4 significant diagnosis, (Congenital) Spinal Dysraphism (Adult Tethered Spinal Cord syndrome), Degenerative disc disease, 4 Lumbar levels and 3 Cervical levels, with moderate impingements on 3 levels (Osteoarthritis), BPD and PTSD, bilateral hearing loss and diabetes 2. There are a few age related issues too, TMI !!!
I could start listing symptoms/impact, but we’d be here for a while.
My last PIP score was 15 for daily living, I get full allowance. 12 for mobility, I get the enhanced rate of mobility allowance. They did take into account the impact of my psychological diagnosis, the assessment was over the phone. The assessment officer, described my overall daily life as, highly challenging.
I also requalified for LCWRA in 2024.
UTTERLY TERRIFIED, I fully realise, this is a green paper and the beginning of a process that may take a long lapse of time. I do also realise there are many who will be impacted in some way, should the green paper become a white paper and bounce back and forth between the commons and the Lords.

Hi Nige,

Very knowledgable and heartfelt read. I have published for others to read, and I agree with you that the subscription to this website pays for itself.

Chris.

Not as though I'm exactly zen about the omnishambles that is 2025 (quite the opposite), but I am trying to practice radical optimism within my capabilities - which is to say acceptance that things may appear extremely hostile, and frankly often provably are, yet simultaneously reminding myself to stay on the lookout for ways to harness that energy toward solidarity and organising with my kin - obviously as and where possible I should add (and which may be entirely impossible for those with the severest conditions).
Having been with a mental health group for some time I assure you that I bitterly appreciate the difficulty of holding things together, let alone building up commonality, but this is something that I appreciate at least those of us more able will strive to accomplish (and occasionally succeed!).
Those such as Ellen Clifford continue the legacy of disability activists, and - while it's not enough simply to protest - it's one angle of approach alongside self-care, involvement (many options here) and downright bloody-minded refusal to accept the boot.

...and catching up with things, FWIW I see such a spirit here: www.disabilitynewsservice.com/we-can-for...ction-say-activists/

(Hopefully mods understand I add this extra to share wider thoughts on empowerment and to mutual ends, rather than casual reportage! )
