First UC Assesment Period- what will it be like (disabled and doing WRA)?

Hi folks,
I'm just wondering what the first assessment period will be like for UC if they're planning on making you look for work? My husband and I are both unable to work, and disabled. He will automatically be in the LCWRA group when we have to migrate naturally to Universal Credit in April. I was advised by citizens advice to wait to claim the carer's element until after the first assessment period so that our ESA Severe Disability Premium Transitional Protection will be maximised.

I have read through the documentation here about applying for UC, but I'm just not sure what to expect during that first month while I'm waiting for the award. I have moderate agoraphobia and I'm wondering if I'll be made to come into the job centre a lot or if I can push to engage with the work coach only over the phone? I can occasionally leave the house with my husband but I just... am trying to prepare myself for making it through whatever I have to during that month. I'm trying to ask my current doctor for a fit note but the practice doesn't seem to do them anymore.

What kind of work related activities would I have to do every week? I'm terrified we'll get sanctioned before we even get the award if I have to keep going to the job centre because I know I'll have a breakdown leaving home that often.

Please, any advice or information would be appreicated.
Kind regards.

Hi sgbd

I have a question for your Citizens Advice adviser--If you claim the Carer's element of UC won't it just erode your Transitional Protection?
Have you ever claimed Incapacity Benefit or ESA or had a DWP medical which was previously called a PCA? I have been advising another couple in a similar situation

Yes- she advises that it would erode the Transitional Protection but that we wouldn't be worse off- the award would stay the same and I wouldn't be required to engage in work related activity anymore.

I myself have not claimed incapacity benefit. I am included on my husband's ESA award but I have never applied myself. I also have never had a DWP medical.

Thank you for your reply!

Hi sgbd

Thank you for your update. I was wondering why they said wait until your second Assessment Period to claim the Carer's Element and as you have said it does not make a difference moneywise.

Do you think it wouldn't make a difference moneywise if I claimed it immediately?

By any chance, do you know what kinds of work related activity are expected of you during the first assessment period?

Thank you again for your help

Hi sgbd

I cannot see how it would make a difference waiting but you need to get an explanation from Citizens Advice regarding the provenance of their advice. Maybe they are aware of some factors that I am not.
The Work Coach would just have an initial discussion during the first AP and maybe ask you to prepare a CV to show them in the second AP.
