Going abroad & how this can be used as info for reassessment

Hi,

I think I am right in understanding that (for a UC claim)if we go abroad for less than 4 weeks we do not have to let DWP know?

I would rather they didn't know because I have heard from several people in other forums that when people were reassessed a reason given for losing their claim was that they had been able to go on holiday.

They said that the DWP seemed to know they’d been on holiday - can you please tell me what avenues they have for finding this out?

I know that the privacy laws they’re pushing through will allow them to see if someone is abroad for more than 4 weeks but that hasn’t been passed yet and they seem to have means of knowing already.

Thanks for all your hard work and support in this forum

Hi LittleC

Another question!
I don't think they can routinely check if you have been abroad at the moment. But that may change in the future if they roll out Ecospend to the rest of the UK. As Ecospend shares info with the banks and can see transactions on cards abroad.

According to the following DWP link you DO have to let the DWP know you're going abroad fory ANY period of time, ie not just for periods over a month, please click www.gov.uk/claim-benefits-abroad/universal-credit

If this is correct and claimants have told the DWP then presumably this is the main way the DWP would know rather than by "indirect" methods!

Kind regards

Mr B

yes they can check inward and outward journeys, mine was checked and logged from 2016 to 2019 over an overpayment. but it was agreed no overpayment in the end, as I had a letter giving me permission.
