DLA Care - Do you have to it or do you just need it?

Hi

I'm sorry if the subject is a bit confusing but I didn't know how else to word it.

I'm about to fill in a DLA for a change in circumstances but I'm confused as to whether I have actually got to have the care that I put in the form or is it that I just need it?

I'm currently on high mob and low care but since February this year I've been having blackouts with no warning, I'm under a Cardiologist and was under a Neurologist but he has discharged me as hes referred me to a new Neurologist who deals with Epilepsy and I've also been referred to an Epilepsy Clinic. As yet I've not had a diagnosis of Epilepsy as I'm still undergoing tests.

Btw I've printed out the guides from this site but it doesn't say on there whether you have got to have the care or whether you just need it.

How do you think I should proceed with the form?

Best wishes

You just have to need the care. Whether or not you have it is irrelevant.

Hi Survivor

Thanks for your reply to my post.

So if I was saying that I needed supervision because of the blackouts (with no warning), surely I would have to say what supervision I get?

This is so confusing.

Just out of interest, with me not having an Epilepsy diagnosis, will a Decision Maker disregard anything to do with my blackouts?

Thanks again for your help.

Best wishes.

You can say what difference it would make if you had supervision.

If you look at the guides to claiming, they give more details on how to explain things so that it is clear what your needs are. If you look on pages 12 and 13 of the guide to claiming DLA on physical health grounds, there's a four-step approach to how you explain your needs. I think this will cover what you want to know.

Actually, if you read the guide, it says that care has only to be 'reasonably required', not medically required'

This enables claimants who live on their own and have accepted care needs, to receive DLA care component, irrespective of whether or not another person is providing care.

Hope this explanation helps.
