You can't die without a death certificate!

It can't be that difficult for the DWP to automatically check that claimants are still alive.

I was quite stunned when this was reported not so long ago;

Officials went to visit Sogan Kato, believed to be 111, to congratulate him on his birthday, but found only his decomposing remains. Mr Kato had received the equivalent of £70,000 in pension payments since his wife's death in 2004, and some of this money had been withdrawn.

According to the audit, 230,000 people listed as being aged over 100 are unaccounted for. The authorities say some of those missing would be 150 years old if found alive, and there are now concerns their deaths went unreported by families looking to defraud the pensions system.

As I've posted previously, the DWP cannot get any more information about you from a Credit Reference Agency, than you can get about yourself for paying just £2.00 for a copy of your credit file, since you're protected by the the Data Protection Act 1998.

See this link on the Information Commissioners website Credit

Just to clarify, Fedup's news report was from Japan not the UK.

We don't want to give Mr. Osbourne another excuse for attacking the diabled :laugh:

Unbeleivably the DWP do not routinely check such things.
I have been in a magistrates court several times and in some cases relatives or a friend of the deceased had been collecting their pension for years.
