It looks like the £20 applies whether or not you get DLA, provided that the IS is on the basis of incapacity for work.

Hi Survivor,

That was my understanding of the situation too.

However, when I was a WRO, I never dealt with means-tested benefits, and strictly speaking B & W doesn't either. We are supposed to stick to queries relating to benefits in Steve's guides, non of which relate to means-tested benefits.

Despite that, I've noticed that I'm not the only moderator who will try to give information on means-tested benefits if we're able.

Sorry if I've thrown a spanner in the works :(

Best wishes.

Jim

Hi,

thankyou all for replying. I am disabled, I'm on IB and DLA as well as IS and HB. I only mentioned the IS and HB as they are the means tested benefits I get, and I'm pretty sure that if I told the council about it I would merely lose that amount in Housing Benefit.

I think based on your replies, I'll just tell the mag that I don't need paying. I would much rather avoid any unnecessary contact with the DWP etc.

That is a very practical solution. But they could pay you in kind I suppose, an ink cartridge and a ream of paper for your drafts that type of thing.

Hi rachel1, maybe you could ask them to donate the money to charity?

Although it does seem a shame that you can't keep it!

Best wishes
Rachel

The tax man in the uk would still give the paper or ink a value and charge tax on it  PIK

What about DWP ? they too

If you receive any money apart from money to cover your expenses this will usually be treated as income and taken into account when assessing your benefit. This includes payment in kind and ‘pocket money’. If you are not sure about anything you are given above your expenses contact your benefits advisor
