ESA what to do when things vary was created by Calan
Ok folks I am a new member and I am probably going to make a pest of myself until i get my ESA50 form completed. However I am really gratful for you adice and to have found this site, which is brilliant. I have read all the advice about filling in the ESA50 form but am still confused as to what to do when things vary. For example if the length of time I can stand variies but by doing so can make my condition worse do I put down that it varies or do I put down that I cannot do it at all?
This really is a nightmare!

Hi Calan
You need to give as much detail as possible. You can tick the 'It varies' box but state how much it varies, how long you can stand for at best, and at worst.
If standing for a period of time causes your condition to worse, give details of this such as the period of time and how much it gets worse. It's best to give estimates of time and frequency in figures so they have a clearer picture.
Alternatively if you feel that standing makes your condition considerably worse and you feel it's necessary to avoid standing whenever possible, you could tick the 'No' box and explain why you have to avoid standing.
That's just my opinion of course, as clearly there is no correct way to fill in one of these dreaded forms.
Good luck
Derek

Hi Calan
You have to be able to carry out activities reliably, repeatedly and safely.
This is described in the Employment and Support Handbook - which you can download from the members area - see section 3.1.9 “Variable and fluctuating conditions” (pages 52-54)
So when filling in your form, you might want to say "I cannot carry out this activity reliably or repeatedly because..." Also be sure to get the same point across at the medical. And in your appeal statement if it comes to that.
Andy.
