My medical records

I have rang up my doctor to ask if I can get a copy of my medical records so that I can use for my appeal. I have been told that they don't have the system to be able to transfer my records onto cd and that I would have to make an appt to view my records and take note of what I need and then they would photocopy it for me and it could cost me up £50 !! Also another day off from work that hubbie has to use in order to take me to the doctor.

Is there any other way I can access to those records?

You could try asking for the computerised printout of GP notes to be sent to you in the post, but this will not include letters and other documents that may be of interest.

You could also make a Subject Access Request for all information held about you for the last few years (to reduce costs) but this would take time.

If it is at all possible your best option may be to make an appointment so you can choose what documents will be helpful. Although it can cost up to £50 I would not expect it to cost this much; it all depends on how much you want photocopied.

My GP charges a fixed £10 fee for computerised notes (or it might even be free) regardless of how long they are and 10 pence per photocopy.

Hi Derek

I have just now made an appt to view my records, I know my records are quite lengthy and they do contain a lot of consultants letters mri, scan etc results so the second option would take too long. Computerised printout is not an option for me as I need to read all the consultants letters, so I will go and see on 16th aug and get as much as I can to back my appeal

Sorry to hear of your problems, I hope you gain the evidence that you need.

It just proves the point that I was making last night, on the G.P. thread, about all the inconsistancies in services and care between different PCT's and G.P.'s practices.

£50 sounds a bit steep, hope it does not cost you that much to get what you need.

I consider myself lucky now, in getting all my files on CD, within 10 days, and only having to pay £20.

I hope so too, at this rate I will be scrapping the barrel by the time the appeal comes up. I just hope it will be worth all the money I am spending and get the three points I need
