Time frame

Hi all,

The situation is that my mum needs to apply for ESA she is in Northern Ireland and wants to move over to Dorset to be near me, I am her only daughter and source of support. How long from submission of forms until she gets an answer? I am just wondering is she best to stay in Northern Ireland until her claim is sorted as she has her gp and neurologist who know her well.

The assessment rate of ESA is paid out quite quickly after the initial forms have been submitted. A while after, ESA50 forms will be sent out and it is these, +/- a face-to-face assessment, that gives the information upon which the decision whether to grant main-phase ESA is made. At this stage it is helpful to send in as much medical evidence as possible as this makes it easier to make the case that the claimant meets the descriptors for ESA

We are unable to tell you whether your mother should move first or make the initial application while still living in NI, she should get face-to-face advice from someone who can outline the pros and cons of each course of action

Hi EM,

The only comment that I could make in passing, is that one would surmise that it would be easier to gain the support of a G.P. or other treating HCP who was well aware of your Mum's medical conditions, than it would be with a new G.P. or HCP.

One would also have to take into account any timescales involved in your Mum's records being transferred to a new G.P. Practice or HCP in mainland UK.
