planning and following journeys was created by werbil
Hi. What actually constitutes as planning a route and following the route of a familiar journey. My son did walk his dog about three times, the last time 8 months ago to a field just across from our house, doesn't feel able to do this dog walk anymore without someone else with him. Is this planning a route, even though it was just three minutes away, and the field takes about 15 minutes to walk up and down, is this also following a journey. My son would never be able to walk to the local shop etc without another person with him. He has autism, selective mutism and anxiety. Thank you.

Planning and following a route are separate activities.

Planning a route is literally about working out how to get from A to B using suitable tools and aids as appropriate. There is no requirement for the person to be able to follow any route that they may produce. The task must be done reliably on the majority of days, so as an example; if the route they calculated is not direct and would take significantly longer to traverse as one calculated by a healthy person, then you can argue that it cannot be done reliably.

Following a route is about navigating from one place to another. There is no definition of what the route might be, it's not London to Leeds nor is it to the end of the road, a better example might be to the local shops. Any issues the claimant has must be to do with the navigation to score points. Again the activity must be completed reliably.

There is a fuller explanation in the PIP Claim guide.
