Planning and following a journey was created by Michael
Hi my partner suffers with mental illness she has been diagnosed with the following mild to moderate cognitive impairment, non organic psychotic disorder, P.T.S.D, alcohol dependence syndrome, dependent personality disorder, depression with psychotic symptoms, anxiety disorder and bereavement disorder. My question is about planning and following a journey. The last journey my partner tried to plan and follow by herself was in 2018 to the hospital to visit her mother which should be a familiar journey involving two bus rides. I would have normally taken her but was unable to because I was unwell. So she tried to plan the journey herself but she could not work out the route of the journey and which bus to catch and which side of the road bus stop she needed to be stood at and where to go once she had got off the bus and she became very confused and anxious and panicked. So I wrote every detail of the journey down for her. So she left to undertake the journey about an hour and half later I received a phone call from my panic stricken partner who informed me she had become very confused and ended up getting on four different busses she had got very confused and got off the last bus in a panic and now did not know where she was. I had to get her to pass the phone to a passer bye who was very kind and gave me their location which was half and hour away from the hospital. I had to go pick her up even though I was unwell myself I did not mind just glad she was safe thanks to the kindness of strangers. I brought her home the journey never got completed as a result of this I now plan her journeys and accompany my partner everywhere she needs to go. My question is to anybody who would be kind enough to answer it is which of the planning and following a journey descriptors does this fit.

Hello Michael,
I would say that every bit of what you described falls in that activity. I find the heading 'planning and following a journey' to be pretty unhelpful, but find it much easier to think of it as 'any problems you have with undertaking a journey which are to do with your ability to walk'. Using that alternative you can see that everything you describe falls into that category.
I hope that helps

Not sure I understand what you mean Catherine sorry if I am not getting it. My partner does not have any problems with the ability to walk her physical health is fine she can also undertake a journey but only if I am with her. My question was and is which descriptor from planning and following a journey best fits the example in my earlier post of what happened with my partner.

Hello Michael,
Sorry I did not make myself clear, or perhaps did not even answer your question!
In the PIP world there are two components to the mobility part. The second one ‘Moving around’ is all about your ability to stand and walk. The first one ‘Planning and Following a Journey’ is everything else.
So everything you described in your post falls into the category of ‘Planning and Following a Journey’ and should be included in her PIP application. In the application you do not have to decide which descriptor is the best fit and I always hate to second guess what an assessor is going to give, even when I know the person well. However, I would think that what you have described is an inability to follow the route of a familiar journey without another person.
Do have a look at our PIP guide, the relevant bit starts on page 77. The description you gave in your post was really good, but you might find some addition hints there.

Hope that makes things clearer!

Thank you Catherine it is much clearer and exactly the answer I was looking for. Sorry to put you in the assessor's shoes but my hope was that the example I gave demonstrates to at least one other person that she cannot follow the route of a familiar journey without another person but as you say we should not second guess an assessor.

Hi Michael,
As per Catherine, your partner's difficulties will fall within the planning journeys etc.
From what you describe, I agree that your partner's problems seem more to be that she can't follow journeys without someone. (This may be both familiar and unfamiliar, this is something you will need to decide.) When writing this out, make sure you concentrate in explaining the extreme anxiety, and what you needed to do to calm your partner. How long was she affected for afterwards?
Give details of what help other people give too. It is really important to convince DWP who are notoriously bad at awarding the correct level of points in this descriptor.
Good luck.
