PIP Phone Assessment Advice was created by Gizmo83
Hi All,
I’ve never done anything like this before and finally applied for PIP at the start of July and have a phone assessment on Monday with IAS which I’m quite anxious about.
I’ve read the updated guide covering the phone assessment and read as much as I could find on the forum but just wondered if there were any posts on here in particular that have any extra advice on how to prepare and what questions may be asked particularly ones that may have been unexpected?
Thanks

Hi Gizmo83
Welcome to the forum, you might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explains where everything is
Welcome to Benefits and Work
We cannot answer your question as it would depend on the assessor and the claimant.
in regards to being prepared for the assessment:
- Write yourself a bullet point list of any particular points you want to get over, so you have it by you during the assessment, tick them as you cover them during the assessment.
- have paper and pens to hand to make any notes such as the assessors name, date, time
- make sure you are seated in a comfortable chair, you are going to be there a while and at table to make notes
- if you can't hear or understand what is being asked then ask them to repeat the question
- don’t let the assessor rush you and get you flustered.
- don't forget to have a glass of water if needed so you don't get a dry throat and lose your voice!
Don't forget to contact DWP 48 hours after the assessment and ask for a copy of the assessors report called PA4.
Let us know how you get on. Good luck.

I had my phone assessment about 10 days ago. The assessor went through a list of my medication then went through each section eg washing, dressing, preparing food etc. She also asked did I have any hobbies, did I have a mobile phone and use social media and could I put my own seat belt on.
Be prepared, make notes over the weekend on each section so you can refer to them if needed in the assessment.
Hope all goes well for you on Monday.

Hello Gizmo,
The only thing I think I would add is don't take additional medication to help you cope with the ordeal. You need the assessor to speak to you when you are in a 'normal condition', not a super-improved version which might not warrent the same number of points.

Thanks for the replies and advice, it’s been really invaluable
I had my assessment this morning as planned and it seemed to go ok, I didn’t feel rushed and they allowed me to explain the problems I have fully. I just hope the report reflects everything the same way.
I know the advice is to call DWP for a copy of the PA4 48 hours after, but I’ve already received a text from them saying they now have the report. Does this mean I could call today and ask for a copy or should I wait?
Thanks.

Hi Gizmo,
I am pleased to hear that you felt that it went well. No problem with asking for the PA4 now, and I hope you like what you read.
