MR for child DLA was created by Lisa
Hello. I am after some advice please. We have just been awarded MRC for our almost 7 year old little boy with diagnosed ADHD and in the final assessments of ASD diagnosis. We are really happy with the MRC award but no mobility component was awarded. We have received the statement of reasons and basically they acknowledged that he does need additional assistance with getting around and staying safe outside but they believed it was age appropriate.

We had a development paediatrician appointment today and she strongly disagreed with this statement and is writing us a supporting letter for the mobility component.

The problem I have is I’m worried about losing or them changing the care award as we are not disputing this at all but so many people have told me not to “rock the boat” as I could lose the award altogether.

I can’t really understand how they can possibly award something and take it away? I don’t know enough about the decision making process so was hoping for an insight or experiences of MR’s.

TIA

Hi TIA, if you have someone professional on your side who can vouch for your son's extra mobility needs this is exactly what is needed to help his case.

You have to prove he has these extra needs on more days than not to be in with a chance of an award.
Does he run away and need an adult with him, does he need extra supervision, would he know to ask for help when lost, how is he at crossing roads? Is it dangerous for him?
You have to mention examples to show he needs an adult with him outdoors primarily.

If you look at our guides on DLA you will find good guidance on what to include.

This site gives more guidance for children with ADHD and DLA too,

Keeping a diary for a few days with examples that match the criteria for mobility and DLA for children would help a great deal.

There is a risk of the care element changing but overall I believe you can only do your best.
Armed with as much evidence as you can to give your son his mobility points and help him for his future too.
