Hi, I was wondering if I could get some advice. My father died 4 weeks ago and he was getting housing and council tax benefit. This has now stopped and my mother has to be assessed to see if she is eligible, she is 81 years of age and has no income other than her state pension. I live with my mother and work full time and I am not on the tenancy but I am classed as a live in carer. She has dementia and she has suffered a stroke which has left her with severe mobility issues. Can anyone help me as I don't know where to turn or to whom I should get advice. Thank you. Pauline

Hi Pauline

I have moved your post, because it was on the end of someone else's and it can get confusing if we're trying to address two people's issues at once.

I'm sorry to hear about the death of your father. Obviously, this is a very worrying time for you. We aren't able to advise you what you're mother might be entitled to because it's outside the scope of the forum. You need help from a specialist benefits adviser and if you follow the link below you should be able to find one in your area. At the very least you should be able to claim Attendance Allowance for your mother - but they will also be able to advise you of other help that is available.

Hi Pauline

As the carer for your mother, does your mother claim Attendance Allowance? as she is over pension age and not in receipt of either PIP or DLA then she may be eligible to claim AA, have a look at our guide:

Attendance Allowance

Remember AA is all about care needs.

You can claim Attendance Allowance if you meet all the following criteria:

~ are over State Pension age.
~ could benefit from help with personal care, such as getting washed or dressed, or supervision to keep you safe during the day or night.
~ have any type of disability or illness, including sight or hearing impairments, or mental health issues such as dementia.
~ have needed help for at least 6 months. (If you’re terminally ill you can make a claim straight away.)

Your mother may also be entitled to claim Pension Credit: www.gov.uk/pension-credit but it would depend on her circumstances and income.

As BIS has said you need to contact Age UK or your local Welfare Rights Organisation who can take all your mothers circumstances into consideration.
