Attendance allowance was created by lizzie23
Hello everyone, hope you can help me with a query please. I am in receipt of pip because of various conditions and my husband is my carer and has had to help me enormously. However he is now 78 and is very unwell himself and helping me is becoming increasing difficult. He is waiting for a hip replacement as he now suffers badly with osteoarthritis. My question is this. We need extra help financially to enable us to have extra help. However as he is my carer would he be able to apply for attendance allowance and would it affect my pip claim as he helps me dress etc. I am afraid that if the DWP know he is I'll then it will affect my claim when basically we need dual help now. Any advice would be gratefully acceptable. Many thanks Lizzie

Hi Lizzie23
If your husband applies for attendance allowance it won't affect your PIP claim. However, it may well affect his carer's allowance, because they could argue that he no longer has the ability to look after you. Some members of B&W have reported losing their carers allowance when they have applied for PIP or AA themselves. It is not a forgone conclusion but it happens. They will certainly know that your husband claims carers allowance.
You would be best to speak to a specialist benefits advisor, who could talk through your options. I have put in a link to find one in your area. advicelocal.uk

Dear Bis thank you for your reply. My husband has never claimed carers allowance, we just managed. However, things are getting more difficult now that's why I queried about attendance allowance for him. Thank you for your advice and link, it's really appreciated. Lizzie x

Hi Lizzie23
Sorry that I misunderstood about the carer's allowance. There should be no issue with him claiming Attendance Allowance. Plenty of households have two different people claiming PIP and/or AA
