ESA application process was created by jojo0209
Hello all,
Last month I applied online for New Style ESA and immediately received an automated text saying the DWP would be in touch and asking me to submit a fit note, which I did.
A few weeks have passed, and today I have received a letter from Job Centre Plus saying I have a telephone interview with a work coach tomorrow. Can anyone tell me what to expect please?
There has been no mention of filling in an ESA50 form so far - will I still have to do this?
I’m currently in receipt of PIP too, if that makes any difference.
Many thanks in advance.
Yours nervously,
Jo.

Hi jojo0209
Our ESA/UC Claim guide has a section on the questions you are likely to be asked during the call, have a look at page 116.
www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/help-for-claimants/esa1
Before your telephone call
- Write yourself a bullet point list of any particular points you want to get over, so you have it by you during the assessment, tick them as you cover them during the assessment.
- have paper and pens to hand to make any notes such as the assessors name, date, time
- make sure you are seated in a comfortable chair, you are going to be there a while and at table to make notes
- if you can't hear or understand what is being asked then ask them to repeat the question
- don’t let the assessor rush you and get you flustered.
- don't forget to have a glass of water if needed so you don't get a dry throat and lose your voice!
Most of the descriptors are different between PIP and WCA although a few do overlap, it will do no harm in mentioning that you receive PIP.
You will not be able to get a copy of the assessors report until a decision has been made, once you get a decision contact DWP and ask for a copy of the assessors report called a UC85.
Good luck for tomorrow, let us know how you get on.
Gary

Hi Jo
If the letter says the telephone interview is with a work coach from Job Centre Plus then I think this might be a claimant commitment interview “. Before your ESA claim goes into payment you have to agree certain things asked by the work coach, such as agree to notify them of any change in circumstances. The call doesn’t last very long, about 10 mins and is nothing to worry about. Once you have agreed you will be sent confirmation of the claimant commitment and your claim will go into payment.
A bit further down the line you will be sent an ESA50 to assess your health condition and may have to attend a WCA.
Hope it goes ok
