ESA Not awarded due to not enough NI contributions

I got a letter saying ESA Not awarded due to not enough NI contributions, why would this come about? do I have to be emplyed for the whole 2 tax years to get enough NI contributions. Or is it possible they have made a mistake? I was on universal credit for a period of time.

Also I think they stopped my claim of universal credit without telling me for about a month, and I wasn't working either, this happened because I did not meet obligations, but the reason I hadn't is because my work coach/advisor said that I didn't have to due to the covid pandemic, (this was about a year ago I think). If this is the reason, then how can I fix this?

Hi Vincent
I saw that you have read Gary’s response on the NI contribution question so I won’t readdress that.
As to your stopped UC, you could possibly ask the work coach to help you with this and, if you still have your online UC journal you could put a note in there.
My experience is that, unfortunately, UC don’t normally backtrack as much as a year but it certainly would be worth trying the above.

Is there any other way to make national insurance contributions for this time? Can’t i just pay them? What is i was self employed, i mean wouldn’t i have to make ny own contributions anyway?

Hi Vincent,

I know that some people have the opportunity to pay in NI contributions retrospectively to increase their pension (prior to drawing that pension) but I am not sure the same would apply to retrospectively claim additional benefit.

However, It would do no harm to call and ask.

Vincent

I'm afraid you can only purchase Class 4 Contributions which only count towards your State Pension, they do not help you meet the requirement for ESA.

Hello

I have the same issue of not having enough NI credits to get ESA. Due to the government stating everyone had to stay at home because of covid I didn’t earn much money. So they have said I can’t get it.
