Hi 25megroup
Whether it will affect their ESA will depend on the type of ESA they receive, how they take their pension and how much it is?
If they are only receiving Contribution Based ESA then a lump sum will not affect their ESA but a regular payment will. If the pension is more then £85/week then there will be a £1/week deduction for every £2 in excess of the £85.
If they are receiving any Income Related ESA, either in part or in whole, then it will affect their ESA £ for £.

Subject to the terms and conditions of her occupational pension, she does not need to action her pension until she reaches State Retirement Age.
This used to be described as Pension Credit Age but the two should now be the same.

Hi 25megroup, Please obtain some specialist advice from a qualified Pensioner's Advisor. There are often many permutations involved with Occupational Pensions, eg lump sum now, and some periodic payments or no lump sum etc or a hybrid. This can be very complicated and the lady's marital status/household/mortgage etc may also be relevant as to deciding as to when to take the pension and in what configuration. Really important to get advice as you can lose a lot of money by not doing so!
I hope this helps.

Morning. She will need to read up, as all schemes are different. Her pension provider(s) will have a website with sections on ‘deferred’ pensions [ones that are kept from old employers after you have left], and ‘retirement due to ill-health’ pensions. If she has medically retired from work, she will/ should receive enhancements which will add employer contributions up to state retirement age (depending on her length of service/ scheme). If she has a ‘deferred pension’ she can draw it early but it won’t be enhanced. She may have both depending on numbers of past employers/ pension schemes.
Any money she receives will be ‘taken off’ her ESA as stated below. She is allowed to keep lump sums and they are not counted as income for 12 months (if I remember right). She can have 6K in savings and still claim ESA.
She should also ask the DWP for a pension forecast as SERPS are disappearing.

To answer the original post, you do need to know what type of ESA the person is claiming, without it, you cannot give accurate information.
I would advise you to seek help from your local Welfare Rights Organisation who can ask all the right questions. You can find your local Welfare Rights Organisation to help you with advice by clicking on the link below and putting in your post code, it will then come up with a MAP with a list of agencies. advicelocal.uk
