Good afternoon peawack, When your over state pension age and have a illness or a disability you can find a range of benefits that may be available to you. Attendance allowance is a benefit for people that are over state pension age who have a disability severe enough to need someone to help look after them for at least 6 months there are different rules if the person applying is terminally ill. there are 2 rates . A medium rate if you need help either in the day or night . A higher rate if you need help both day and night Attendance allowance is not means tested so any savings or income are not affected or taken in to account when applying for this benefit. Depending on income and savings you maybe eligible for these benefits . Pension credit (GOV.UK) . Housing benefit (GOV.UK) . Council Tax Reduction (GOV.UK) If you are eligible to claim attendance allowance , you could be entitled extra pension credit, Housing Benefit or Council Tax Reduction. you may also be entitled to : . Help with health costs . A cold weather payment (GOV.UK) . A winter fuel payment (GOV.UK) Unfortunately attendance allowance cannot be used to lease a car through the mobility scheme. however if your friend receives any of the following allowances and has least 12 months award remaining, you can exchange all or part of the allowance to cover the cost of the lease agreement and could be entitled to a mobility car to help with mobility needs. . Higher Rate mobility component of disability Living allowance . Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of personal Independence Payments (pip) . war Pensioners Mobility supplement (WPMS) . Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP) You may be able to get a blue badge give your local council a ring they should be able to assist you through the process ask the council if there is any other help that is available in your area I wish you and your friend all the best kind regards katherine

Thanks, Katherine.
That's really helpful.
Just one thing, is his age a bar to claiming PIP or DLA ?

Unless he has already got a ongoing claim for DLA OR PIP that was started before his pension age then he would not be able to put in a claim for DLA or PIP benefit, However he could apply for attendance allowance .
hope this helps let us know how you get on
kind regards
katherine

For clarity, Attendance Allowance does not have a Mobility component and mobility issues will not be considered unless they can be shown to have a direct impact on the claimants' care needs.

Also, Medium Rate Care is paid for care needs during the day OR the night, the Higher Rate is only paid for care needs both day AND night. There is no Lower Rate.

The criteria are the same as DLA.
