Unpaid work is work where another person might reasonably be expected to be paid for doing it.

As a general rule, it is likely that work for anything other than a charity will be considered as unpaid and not voluntary.

A starting point would be to ask if there are others volunteering their time or would they be the only one?

Thanks Gordon - the cafe is run by the charity for disabled people where she goes once a week to do other activities (cooking, gardening etc) that they organise for them (and help them with). So sounds like it is voluntary - also I am sure they would be helping her with the work - so I doubt it would be enough that someone would argue it replaces a paid person. But it is interesting to know the difference - not sure how the difference affects universal credit but if it ever comes up again I will bear it in mind.
