College Bursary for Part-Time Student & ESA was created by Whistler_Lightspeed
I am a part-time student (5 hours a week, and possible extra 2 hours a week may happen) at a local college and am in the ESA support group as part of a joint claim with my wife. I am using this course to as part of therapy/self help for disability struggles CPTSD/moving forward.

The college have just started to pay me a small hardship based bursary to cover travel to college and course material.

Is it important for me to declare this bursary to the DWP and will it affect how much ESA my wife and I are paid?

The first payment only went in last Monday (28th Feb).

Thanks

Hi Whistler_Lightspeed

Disabled students' allowance and travel expenses grant does not count as income.

Institutional bursaries and scholarships, if the bursary is to help with course costs then it is not counted as income.

I would contact your student union on your campus who will be able to tell you what benefits you can and cannot claim.

Did a part time fine art degree, not even 16 hours a week because I did the degree over 6 years. Graduated in 2010, some years ago. I was on D.L.A. at that time and I used to receive disabled students' allowance and travel expenses (taxis) plus a scholarship. It never affected any of my benefits.
Not sure what rules may or may not apply now. Hope this helps. Definitely worth doing any education though.
Good for our mental health and self esteem and do we need that! Especially if one has a disability.
