Length of PIP Award was created by killbot99
Hi

Just a question about what determines the length of an award for PIP. When I was on DLA I had an indefinite award as my condition wasn’t expected to change, but since moving over to PIP I just seem to get 3 year awards.

They say my needs might change. i have Ehlers Danlos among other things. I’ve had it since birth as it’s genetic. I’m not sure how I’m going to improve. I just find it strange and frustrating that I keep getting reviewed, which seems a waste of time and resources, as well as very stressful.

I’d appreciate some idea of how they reach this decision and is there anything I can do next time to get a longer award?

Hi killbot99

How long will awards last?
Shorter term awards of 1 or 2 years will be given where changes in the claimant's needs could be expected in that period. The shortest award period which can be given is 9 months.

Longer term awards, such as 5 or 10 years, will be given where changes are less likely but most of these will be reviewed at set times within the award period.

Ongoing awards
Updated DWP guidance says the following:
These are made where the claimant’s health condition(s) and needs arising are very unlikely to improve. The Award Review date will always be 10 years from the assessment date.

On-going awards for claimants can be reached in one of two ways:

* following advice from the AP (assessment provider) that no review is required and the claimant’s restrictions on Daily Living/ and or Mobility are stable and unlikely to change significantly or they have very high levels of needs which will only deteriorate.

* and where the claimant is awarded enhanced/enhanced and their needs are not going to improve or would only deteriorate.

Note: You may also consider an enhanced daily living award alone where the claimant is State Pension Age or over and has either not been awarded the mobility component or has been awarded the mobility component at the standard rate and their mobility needs are not going to improve.

If the AP considers the claimant’s restrictions will continue but are likely to deteriorate they may advise on an appropriate review period rather than no review.

WARNING! - Not all PIP awards have a review date!

Some short-term awards have no review date.

In these cases, no review form or reminder is sent and it is the claimant’s responsibility to make a new claim.
