ESA & DLA after moving to new area was created by angelab
I'm about to move house into a completely different area. What response can I expect from DWP once I inform them of my change of address? When I last moved in 2006 ( also to new area) I was put through medical reassessment. I’m aged 64 and in receipt of ESA (support group) and indefinite award for DLA lower rate care. My last ESA assessment was in 2019, and DLA was 2011

Also, I will be moving into a temporary address for up to 12 months while we find somewhere permanent to live. We will have mail redirection in place for 12 months. Do I actually need to inform DWP, especially as my first address will be temporary?

Hi angelab

Providing you do not have to apply for help with housing costs then at this moment in time you can stay on legacy benefits.

You do need to inform DWP of your change of address even if it is temporary, if not you may find that your benefits have stopped, which may cause you unwanted stress and hardship.

When you have settled you may want to think about reviewing your DLA before you reach state pension age if your health condition has deteriorated as the mobility component cannot increase once you reach state pension age.

Hi Gary
I have the same question. I am moving from London to Perth Scotland. I am on ESA enhanced I also receive housing benifit. I have no idea what I need to do. Can I stay on ESA and claim housing benifit?

Hi jocks

As you will be moving to a different local authority area you would need to apply for UC to cover any housing costs.

I know that some benefit rules in Scotland are changing, I would therefore advise you to contact a Welfare Rights Organisation in Scotland to get the up to date details.

You could try Citizen Advice Scotland; www.cas.org.uk 0800 028 1456

Hi Gary
Thank you for your reply. Just to clarify - do you think that my ESA/ DLA will just continue when I have relocated, without need for a reassessment? I will be under a completely different benefit office. Basically, I'd really prefer to avoid the risk of having to complete another ESA50 and undergoing a face to face assessment. I know my health will be worse after the move, for a period, and last thing I will need is a reassessment

Why might my benefits stop if I don't inform them of change of address, as they are paid direct into my bank account.

Hi angelab

You can stay on ESA and DLA when you relocate, if you have to apply for help towards your housing costs then you will have to apply for UC and your ESA will stop but your DLA will stay in payment. If you are in the support group the you do need to apply for UC before your ESA stops. If your ESA stops for just one day when you apply for UC you will have to go through the assessment phase.

You will need to inform DWP when you move as they will find out . We have had a number of posts on the forum where members benefits had stopped because they had not informed DWP they had moved. This is due to a number of reasons such as fraud or financial and economic abuse.
