carer premium question ? was created by reds123
hi all, i have done benefits calculator on 2 sites and one gives me a carers premium of £37.70p but one misses it off the calculation so i am not sure if i should qualify for it can someone clarify the qualifying conditions please. i live with my wife and both get pip standard rate mobility, and 1 standard and 1 enhanced daily living. then we get esa with personal allowance, support group component, enhanced disability premium, severe disability premium, would having these premiums mean i do not qualify for a carer premium, we stopped claiming carers allowance a while ago to qualify for the sdp as this increased our payments. hope this makes sense many thanks.

Hi reds123

You could get £67.60 a week if you care for someone at least 35 hours a week and they get certain benefits.

You do not have to be related to, or live with, the person you care for.

You do not get paid extra if you care for more than one person.

If someone else also cares for the same person as you, only one of you can claim Carer’s Allowance. www.gov.uk/carers-allowance

Severe disability premium
You must get the disability premium or income-related ESA, and one of the following qualifying benefits:

~ PIP daily living component
~ AFIP
~ DLA care component at the middle or highest rate
~ Adult Disability Payment daily living component
~ Attendance Allowance (or Constant Attendance Allowance paid with Industrial Injuries ~ Disablement Benefit or War Pension)

You usually cannot have anyone aged 18 or over living with you, unless they’re in one of these situations:

~ they get a qualifying benefit
~ they’re registered blind
~ they’re a boarder or subtenant (but not a close relative)
~ they make separate payments to the landlord

You cannot get the severe disability premium if someone is getting Carer’s Allowance or the carers element of Universal Credit for looking after you.

If you’re in a couple
You’ll get the higher amount of severe disability premium if both you and your partner are eligible.

You can get the lower amount if:

~ someone gets Carers Allowance or the carers element of Universal Credit for looking after only one of you
~ only one of you meets the eligibility criteria and the other is registered blind

Enhanced disability premium
To get this, you must be under pension credit age.

You must get the disability premium or income-related ESA, and one of the following:

~ PIP daily living component at the higher (‘enhanced’) rate
~ AFIP
~ DLA care component at the highest rate
~ Adult Disability Payment - daily living component at the enhanced rate

You’ll also get this if you’re in the support group for income-related ESA. www.gov.uk/disability-premiums/eligibility

In a nutshell, if you claim Carers Allowance, who ever you claim CA for will loose the SDP element, you will not be any better off, infact you could be worse off.

Reds

Just to add to the excellent information that Gary has provided.

If one or both of you are entitled to Contribution Based ESA then that person can receive the Carers Premium in addition to your current payments as the ESA(CB) prevents payment of the CA leaving the SDP in payment but enabling the CP.
