My wife has an aneurysm on the heart and 3 stints as well as arthritis and other conditions i am her carer but i have conditions myself but i have to carry on for my wife i have idiopathic angioedema which i have an epi pen for as my tongue swells up whenever it does so it hinders me and i had an operation to replace a bone in my foot from my hip as i have Mueller Weiss disease. Could i get PIP for me to help me as well as carers or is that not possible? If anyone could help me that would be great. Thank you. Fergus.
Hi Gus Mac, There is nothing in law that prevents someone claiming PIP as well as Carer’s Allowance. I know several people that do this.CA is an earnings replacement for carers, who can not work at all or can only work part time due to caring responsibilities. PIP as you may know is non means tested for anyone with sufficient disability. The only caveat I would add is that because PIP is normally awarded because you need help to look after yourself, DWP are going to think how come you can look after someone else when you can't look after yourself! It is a valid comment. Of course it all depends on what caring you do and your own disabilities. So in a nutshell, yes you can claim both benefits but it may raise a question or 2 at DWP, who may not believe you are physically capable of caring if you claim PIP. This can sometimes lead to awkward questions and investigations. I hope this helps. LL26
