Can anyone please help or advice me? was created by DaveWordsworth
Dear Benefits and Work forum members

Apologies for reaching out. However, I am truly struggling.

My position is that I have been working as a teacher for the past 5 years. I had to resign in March due to ill health. Due to my disability I recieve PIP which was awarded 2 years ago at the higher rate for both components.

Now I am in a position where I have little money (Less than £800 pounds) and I am unsure of what I can apply for.
When I put my details into both benefits calcultors - one said I can only recieve Universal Credit for £738 per month and the other despite working for 5 years said I can recieve New Style ESA and Universal Credit combined which also works out at £738 per month? I can not understand if this is accurate as what would be the point in having worked and then having to apply for New Style ESA if the amount I recieve for the above 2 examples is the same?

Also, I have never applied for Universal Credit, ESA or Council Tax Support. Hence, I am unsure and nervous of the process?
I know a freind of mine some years ago did have old style ESA which she also recieved disability premium - I understand that this is something that I can not apply for with the new style ESA?

If any of you helpful members may have possibly been in my position or can advice based upon the above on what I would be entitled to and the best way to proceed it would be greatly appreciated. I am really struggling.

Thanking you all kindly and respectfully in advance.
Dave

Hi Dave

Welcome to the forum, you might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explains where everything is.

Welcome to Benefits and Work

Do you know that your personal details are showing. How to change your details
www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/help

New Style ESA is a Contribution Based benefit and is not means tested with the exception of pension income which can reduce the amount that you receive.

The Income Related benefit that goes with NS ESA is Universal Credit.

Depending on your circumstances you may be able to claim both UC and NS ESA.

You asked a question a few years ago and I gave you information about Derbyshire Welfare Rights Organisation who have a very good reputation and may be able to help you claim all your benefit entitlements, I enclose a copy of the link to your previous question.

Derbyshire Unemployed Workers Centres are very good too, and operate drop-ins across the county:

Sorry to say we also had a worse-than-useless experience with CAB in Bedfordshire some time ago. DUWC have helped many people with benefits.
Best wishes, Denby
