New medical condition was created by Lin
Hi everyone,
My current claim is due for review next year. I`ve been diagnosed with two new conditions over the last year, neither of which will get any better. One has caused a form of spinal arthritis and the other nerve damage resulting in neurological symptoms and hearing loss for which I have just been prescribed hearing aids. would it be best to report this now or wait for review?
Many thanks for any advice.

Nothing on this board constitutes legal advice - always consult a professional about specific problems

Hi Lin The DWP always say that if there has been a change in a claimant's condition they should report it immediately, and this is particularly the case if someone's condition has improved and therefore they may not be eligible for their current award. The DWP also want to know if people have spent a prolonged time in hospital -which has an impact on their benefits. However, this is not the case with you. Your condition has deteriorated and you could make one of two choices and it may depend on your current award. If your new conditions would mean that you were eligible for an increased award - then you might want to inform them now. If you already receive an enhanced award for both mobility and care, you may want to wait until your next review to inform them. As soon as you write and tell them your condition has changed it will trigger a review and you will be sent a review form. BIS

Morning Lin. I would spend this time gathering medical evidence to back up your next award. As BIS said, it is only worth your while informing them if you are likely to get an increased award. Having ‘prognosis’ information will help with the length of any future award given. I appreciate this is a very difficult time. I would get some Mental Health support, as you are dealing with a lot. Ask your GP for a referral to IAPTS. Take care x
