Renting out spare room whilst on ESA was created by fee23
Hi there, HELP! I've on ESA since 2015. I'm in the support bracket. I live in in an apartment owned by myself and my mother. However, my Mother is in a nursing home. I would like to rent out my spare room and I know there is a limit of £100 a week but renting out your room I don't think is included. I do need to be able to cover my bills as I don't actually get enough towards housing costs each month to cover my service charges, maintenance, and ground rent. Can I legally do that and inform the council and the DWP. I'm a bit worried about it. Please can anyone help. It's really important.
Thank you, Fiona

Nothing on this board constitutes legal advice - always consult a professional about specific problems

Hi Fee23
I'm sorry, but your question is outside the scope of this forum. You would be wise to speak to a specialist welfare advisor who can look at the whole picture of your finances and any implications. I have included a link to see if you can find one in your area.

Hi fee23, might be worth calling the Shelter helpline as well. They may be able to advise especially as you could be providing accommodation for someone in need. Also consider checking out the Ukrainian refugee scheme

"Sponsor housing
What about my council tax discount?
Council tax discounts will not be affected if you sponsor and host a Ukrainian household in your home. We are offering a £350 a month ‘thank you’ payment to all sponsors – this will not affect any council tax discounts."
They do not say as far as I can see how it would affect your own benefit situation.
But depending where you live, £350 a month for 12 months might be a good rate for a room in a flat share if you were up for it.
Best wishes,
Denby

I came across this, but as BIS said, you really need to speak to a specialised adviser as everyone’s circumstances are different.
