Hi all,

I’ll just briefly cover my journey so far. I applied for PIP in July 2021, had my assessment and when I received the PA4 it was shocking. Lots of errors and things listed as fact that were incorrect and not even discussed. They recommended 0 points for both daily living and mobility which DWP agreed with on their decision.

I submitted my MR and DWP awarded me points for both daily living and mobility but keeping both below the level that would get me any award.

I then submitted my appeal to the tribunal and DWP didn’t respond. I emailed the tribunal and asked if they could list my case without a response and then a few days later got a call from DWP saying that after reviewing my appeal they could award me the enhanced rate for daily living which I accepted.

I’m now considering my options for the mobility component. I have both physical and mental health issues. The mental health side prevents me from making an unfamiliar journey on my own. The person who called me said at least 50% of my journeys need to be unfamiliar and also said how hard it would be for that to be true as after a while the same journey won’t be unfamiliar etc.

This didn’t seem right to me. I have to be accompanied for 100% of any unfamiliar journeys which is what I thought would be looked at rather than them saying at least 50% of my journeys have to be unfamiliar?

I know I can submit a new appeal to the tribunal about this part but I wanted to make sure if my thinking on it is right or not before I make myself look stupid and risk what they’ve now awarded me.

Thanks :)

Hi Gizmo83

The Going Out activity looks at three things.

Planning a route - this is primarily a cognitive or sensory (e.g. blindness) activity. You are being asked about the problems you would have with working out how to get from one place to another, you do not need to be able to follow the route that you are planning.

Undertaking a Journey - this is to do with mental health issues such as agoraphobia and social anxiety and is concerned with you leaving the house to go somewhere, they will be interested in the things that stop you doing this. You need to show that you would suffer "overwhelming psychological distress" to meet the criteria.

Following a route - This activity about the problems you would have navigating a route. So, are there any problems; cognitive, sensory or mental health issues that would prevent you from doing this? This is different from undertaking a journey, in fact, if you cannot undertake a journey then you will not score points for following one and vice versa.

If you say your walking is restricted, you would need to be unable to reliably walk more than 50m to score sufficient points for an award just on the Moving Around activity.
