My friend's assessment today cancelled at last minute - no assessor!

Hi all,

The friend I am currently helping with his first PIP claim had a phone call fifteen minutes after his assessment should have started today. This was to inform him that it couldn't take place as there was no health care professional available.

Understandably he is really upset after all the preperation - not to mention the stress this has caused him. It has been rescheduled for the 15th of May.

Is this normal? I was previously led to believe this only usually happened if they could't find an assessor who didn't object to an assessment being recorded.

Please forgive my ignorance on this matter but it's something I've never had to deal with.

Could it be there was no-one available qualified in his field of disability or is it just plain bad organisation?

Any feedback would be invaluable.

Regards,

Phrank.

Hi Phrank

I'm sorry this has happened to your friend - it is very distressing. Unfortunately, it happens quite often. It can just be down to last-minute sickness and them not having any replacements.

The assessors do not have to be qualified in any specific field of disability - this is why some claimants have their applications turned down because the assessor has no experience or specialist knowledge of their condition and no understanding of the impact it may have on their person's life.

Hi BIS,

Thanks for your reply. I guessed as much to be honest. I told him it could be sickness or even lack of specialist knowledge, which it seems not to be the case.

Apparently, the person who phoned him was quite abrupt. Fortunately, he was with his wife for support but this still upset him. Just the kind of treatment you need whilst still recovering from a stroke. (I think not).

I will pass this message on to him so he knows it's quite common.

Regards,

Phrank.
