Sister moving in - effect on benefits was created by Rick2Wise
Hello all,

I receive ESA (including severely disabled, Disability Income Guarantee and Limited capability for work/support group uplifts). I also receive PIP and Housing Benefit. Based on this income I pay a fair amount towards my care which is arranged via the Council.

My sister and I are planning for her to move in with me in a couple months. I will notify the DWP and council accordingly. I expect my benefits will reduce but hopefully not by more than the cost of my care which my sister will take over.

I have it in my mind that once I no longer live alone I will lose the severely disabled and disability income guarantee uplifts. Is that true? Or do I only lose those if my sister applies for carers allowance? If she is caring for me will it be reduced even if she doesn't apply for carers allowance?

The answers to the above and any advice generally on the situation would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Rick

Hi Rick2Wise

Thank you for your question, we cannot answer it as it is quite complex and we do not have enough information to give you a satisfactory answer. such as your age, number of bedrooms, care plan.

We would advise you to seek help from your local Welfare Rights Organisation; you can find your local Welfare Rights Organisation to help you with advice by clicking on the link below and putting in your post code, it will then come up with a MAP with a list of agencies. advicelocal.uk

If your sister is going to live with you as your carer then you will need to get a letter from your doctor stating you need overnight care.

The main benefit you will potentially loose is SDP; www.entitledto.co.uk/help/severe-disability-premium unless your sister is also in receipt of a qualifying benefit.
