Taken Severe disablity premium away. was created by Maria Hagen
Hi,

I have just had a letter from ESA saying that there has been a change in my circumstance. There hasn't.
It says from the 1 September there will be a change of money coming in. I looked through and they
are taking away my Severe disability premium. I am still on legacy benefits and there have been no changes.
Any ideas what is going on? Typically, I looked at the letter at 5pm. So I can't speak to them. I am beside myself.
It's hard enough getting by as it is.

Hi Maria,
SDP is awarded if you live alone (without other adults or with only people who claim PIP or equivalent)
And
receive at least standard daily living PIP
And
get means tested benefit such as ESA
And
No one gets Carer's Allowance for looking after you.

Alternatively if you live with a partner who gets the appropriate level of PIP etc and neither of you have a carer with CA.
Please check that your PIP award is still ongoing and hasn't ended -awards don't necessarily get renewed especially if they derived via a tribunal. You might have missed a deadline?
If you now have a carer with CA this will also cause SDP to cease.
Moving in with a non disabled partner or even having an adult child live back at home might cause SDP to cease too. If you have a partner who earns money it may be that you are no longer get entitled to means tested ESA- you might just be eligible for contribution based. If so there is no SDP element available for this. This could also happen if you eg inherit money taking you over the capital limit.
If none of these events has happened then DWP may have made a mistake. I suggest you brave the long wait on hold and try and ask why they think SDP has stopped. Get them to put it in writing. It may be something simple you sort over the phone. You may need to contact PIP office to check there are no problems with your PIP award.
If not immediately sortable await the letter and put in a Mandatory Reconsideration explaining why you are still entitled to SDP. You may need to send in copies of documents to prove your claim.
I hope this helps.

I have been on PIP standard one, not the mobility. They received my review form on the 20th July 2021. They still haven't got it over to assessment. They say they can see things have got worse and want an assessment. I have emailed my MP and they have contacted them and asked what is going on, that was two weeks ago. I haven't heard anything. They have been extending my PIP until it happens but the ESA completely came out of the blue.
