UC MIXED AGE COUPLE PENTIONS was created by terdun9
Back in march 2021 when my husband became a pensioner and myself is only 61 so therefore we are classed as what they call a mixed-age couple, this seemed to cus no end of trouble because my husband was getting a carer's allowance for me, and also I was getting the same for him.
Because he is now getting his state pension, he can no longer get CA for me, so we stopped this immediately, I still get CA for him, and because we were on ESA and I was part of my husband's claim for many years,
because of this having to move over to UC I had to make a UC claim. this was done and boy oh boy were we worse off by a lot. and I must say after a lot of different amounts being paid to us never the same amount 2 months in a row we then went to a £0 award to £44 then £226 every month it's different and I am constantly having to ask if this is correct why do I ask then this every month well simply nothing ever changes our end we are still a mixed age couple he still doesn't get CA but I do I really don't understand why this is the case. everyone who talks to me from my local council all say this looks so wrong
we are a lot worse off and we never know what's coming next, not going into details as to what trouble this makes monthly when it come to my council tax payments
This means that we lost our housing benefit claim so in return we also now lost our chance to get I think it is called pension credit because we are no longer on housing benefit please correct me if I'm wrong on this can't remember what the name
sorry for posting this but I just read a new article on here about ms Coffey and got me thinking are we my husband and I not getting what we are meant to be getting be
and I do understand that nobody can say for sure in indvigual cases just don't understand

Hi terdun9
You are not alone, unfortunately I come across cases such as your frequently.
What you should have done before your partner reached State Pension age was to claim UC with a live ESA claim. You should then have been passported on to LCWRA without having to go through the assessment phase.
What happened when your husband became a pensioner, his ESA claim would have stopped which meant that your live ESA claim ceased so when you applied for UC you have to go through the assessment phase (13 weeks).
Pension Credit is not based on Housing Benefit, as a mixed aged couple you cannot claim PC until the youngest of a couple reaches State Pension age, the rules for Pension Credit changed 15/05/2019, prior to this date PC was based on the eldest of a couple.
You need to apply for Council Tax Reduction seperately from UC. I would advise you to seek help from your local Welfare Rights; you can find your local Welfare Rights Organisation to help you with advice by clicking on the link below and putting in your post code, it will then come up with a MAP with a list of agencies. advicelocal.uk

hi, there I just thought I let you know that I went to the job centre today to ask why our payments are so different again,
So it turns out that for the last 6 mths they have not been taking carers allowance off my UC claim and for some reason I have not noticed I have been so poorly and have not really checked my statement nor have I told them that our CA has stopped or is any different to any other month, the difference of at least £200 to much
The lady at the job centre sort of said she thinks this is because we have our carers paid weekly not mothy this is why your overpayment has happened so it now looks like I'm going to get a considerable overpayment bill because of their mistake its not my mistake as it really isn't my job to keep phoning them and checking as I did for the first few months of my claim.
SO I GUESS WHAT NEXT well I was just about to phone CA to ask if I can be paid mothy because the last at the Job Centre said if that was the case this Should never happen again.
will I be liable to have a huge bill not is it their fault or is mine worried sick about it now?

Hi Terdun9
Generally, when the DWP make a mistake, they still require claimants to pay back any monies they have received that they were not entitled to.

If the overpayment is due to Carers Allowance check whether you have received the Carers Element in your UC asthis would reduce how much you owe if not being paid.
