Pip- short notice assessment was created by Rachel
Hello,
I rang the assessment service for an update on when my assessment date would be and they said it was tomorrow (this was last week)
I didn’t think I had a choice and attended the assessment( telephone) but I now wish I had not done this as it did not go well. I didn’t feel prepared and was not able to have anyone with me. I just wondered if I was to call the dwp and explain this, they would refer me for a new assessment. I wasn’t able to print out my notes or the pip forms I completed so feel this meant I was not able to convey everything during the assessment. Is it worth a try trying to get a new assessment?

Hi Rachel

Welcome to the forum. Please go into your records and change your forum name. At the moment your email address is showing and this is open for anyone to see on the internet. Follow the link on how to do this benefitsandwork.co.uk/guides-for-claimants/faq/forum

You might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explains where everything is; www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/guides-for-claimants/faq/forum

I know many claimants who think they have done badly at an assessment only to get the enhanced components, so don't be too dishearten. You usually have 8 weeks from the assessment to the decision.

There is a small window for you to write to the Decision Maker but you will need to be quick.

You need to contact DWP and ask for a copy of the assessors report, when you have the assessment report you will have a better understanding of how the DWP Decision Maker has come to their conclusions and you will now be able to argue against them.

I usually use a highlighter to highlight any inaccuracies, once you have gone through the report you then set out why you are applying for a MR and go through each descriptor one at a time why you disagree with the assessor and try and match it with any supporting documents you may have sent in.

Understand that the assessor is offering an opinion when they say 'in my opinion' you can do the PIP activities, tackling these head-on is unlikely to be successful, you need to show that the basis of that opinion is founded on incorrect information, so try and refer to your evidence to undermine what they have said., remember they are just an opinion which is not based on fact.

Also, try and stick to issues that lead to your scoring points, I often hear members referring to the assessors spelling, as an example, whilst it may show a lack of professionalism, raising it as an issue isn't going to help you get an award.

Your primary task is to show that you meet the criteria, there are many reasons you may have failed, you need to address each of these but don't get bogged down in criticising the assessment report unless you can clearly show that it is incorrect, it is a lot easier to argue the facts of the situation;

Lastly, make sure that you understand the criteria that you are being assessed against you can put the best case forward that is possible but you won't score points if you do not meet the PIP Descriptors.

The first stage to challenging a Decision is for you to request a Mandatory Reconsideration, this needs to be done in writing to the DWP, within one month of the Decision, to the office that dealt with your claim, have a look at our PIP MR & Appeal guide; benefitsandwork.co.uk/guides-for-claimants/pip

For the CRMR1 form to initiate your MR; www.gov.uk/government/publications/chall...ork-and-pensions-dwp

When you have a better idea of the issues with your claim, come back to the forum and we will do our best to help.

Thanks Gary,

Have got a copy of my report. It was in my post box and hadn’t checked before my first post on here.
I got 6 points for daily, nothing for mobility.
The assessor was very abrupt and did not allow me to go back to questions or areas that I did not think were covered.
I suffer from long COVID, since last year which has triggered depression and have not really been able to leave the house since. Struggle with everyday activities but have yet to receive long COVID specialised support which was mentioned in the report.
I am a member and did use your guides in my pip forms which I felt accurately conveyed my issues, however, with the short notice of the assessment, I just did not feel prepared, being I was given less then 24 hours notice and had none of my documents with me as I did not have time to print them out.
I did not receive a letter, just advised it was on the 27/07 when I rang to check on the 26/07. I requested a copy of the assessor report the next day and it arrived today.
What do you think my best option next to do is -

Should I request a new assessment based on the fact I was not given notice, did not receive an appointment letter and was not prepared for the assessment? Or,

Should I send a letter prior to the decision (before the decision maker makes there decision?) and if so, do I need a name or to inform them. Who do I send it too?

Or should I just prepare my MR for when I receive the final decision?

Thanks again

Hi Rachel

I would go through the assessors report with a highlighter highlighting any inaccuracies, the next stage would be to apply for a MR.

Sometimes the decision maker does not always follow the assessors report, so you may want to prepare for a MR thinking the worse but hoping for the best. If the decision makers follows the assessors report then you are already to apply for MR then Appeal.
