UC and savings was created by denise45
Ive been of work now for 5 months and have gone down to half pay, i dont think i will be able to go back, my health has deteriorated, i have anxiety depression, chronic back pain, restless legs, hypothyroid and possible PoTs, my questions are, i have about 500 over the savings limint ofr UC and need to get a reclining chair as im in pain every evening sitting down, and this would really help, would this be deprivation of finances? second question, do i need to wait until work sack me due to not being well before claining UC, if i give up my job will i be sanctioned? I also care for my grandson who has Autism, im struggling with this but still doing it, should i claim carers credit for him or go down the health route?
Many Thanks in advance

Nothing on this board constitutes legal advice - always consult a professional about specific problems

Hi denise45
Thank you for your questions.
If you require a reclining chair to help you with your condition, then buy one, but keep a copy of the receipt just in case you are required to show it and if there any issues with the chair.
We cannot answer your second question as we do not have all the details, we would advise you to seek help from your local Welfare Rights Organisation who can take all your circumstances into consideration; you can find your local Welfare Rights Organisation to help you with advice by clicking on the link below and putting in your post code, it will then come up with a MAP with a list of agencies. advicelocal.uk
You may want to see if your work can medically retire you, due to ill health, but seek advice first before you go down this route, if you belong to a Union then ask your rep.

Hello denise45
As Gary suggests, perhaps you can discuss with your employer, the possibility of medical retirement on the grounds of ill health.
Best wishes

Go down the ‘ill health retirement’ route. It is official and HMRC will be informed, which will help with future benefit claims. If you leave work without this you may be considered ineligible for UC as you have stopped work voluntarily.
With the £500 I would buy the chair.. also look at your white goods etc to see if any need replacing.
Think about your grandson after you have sorted out all of the above. Carers Allowance is not something you can live on. If he is an adult, he may well be receiving SDP; or indeed his parents may well be claiming for him already.
