Unfortunately people voted to privatise the utilities. They were told of the long term reality, but chose to ignore it…

Hi Mike1950,
Your question is about prisoners ‘rights’ compared to people with disabilities, and how we are more affected by the current cost of living crisis as they are being clothed, fed, housed etc during their time in prison.
I would have to agree with what you are saying - it feels very unfair - but I would say this applies to many other vulnerable groups too like people who are unintentionally homeless and children who have no control over these things.
Whilst prison may not be the holiday camp that it is sometimes made out to be in the media, offenders’ rights often seem to take priority over others such as the rights of the victims. I take on board comments about the reality of life in prison but I would argue that it is meant to be an unpleasant experience. People end up there because of the crimes they have committed including rape and murder, so I find it very difficult to have sympathy for their experience whilst in prison. I’m sure many others with family or friends in prison would have a different point of view which I accept. One of the main purposes of prison though is to act as a deterrent. The other issue is people are are often imprisoned to protect the public and this comes at a financial cost, but I would say a necessary one.
Life for people with disabilities is unfair and harder in many ways compared to the ‘average’ person but we are not the only groups who are vulnerable and disadvantaged. I am still much better off than some people who are suffering really horrific poverty, deprivation, famine or war etc. I am so grateful to the Benefits and Work team as well as all the members and the brilliant forum posts which have helped so many of us navigate the totally confusing and inhumane disability benefits system. I just want to take the opportunity to say thank you for all your hard work on our behalf.

Hi mel0308, sadly although you concede the red tops mislead the readers with all the 'holiday camp' stuff, sadly you omit the key point about the prison system, which like the NHS is now substantially broken. Prison is supposed to rehabilitate very nearly all prisoners. I.e. lead them to accept responsibility for the wrong they have done, and learn how to avoid ever doing it again. And learn skills to hold down a useful job outside. Only a handful are deemed too dangerous to the public to ever be released. However the rehabilitation is now almost non existent in most prisons. And due to this state of affairs, we taxpayers are paying for people to be kept in prison long after they should have been released fully rehabilitated. To me as a taxpayer this is wasting taxpayers' money.
