Guidance after submitting PIP form was created by Harry
May I have the advice of this forum please?
My wife has young onset dementia, I submitted a PIP claim form on her behalf with the help of Citizen's Advice. Having read your PIP guidance, I now see that my wife's condition is worse than is fully described on the form and that her mobility has deteriorated. The form is waiting to be seen by IAS (6 weeks since submission). Can I provide more information at this stage? If so, what is the best way to do so?
Thank you for you help

Hi Harry
Welcome to the forum.
You might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explains where everything is; www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/guides-for-claimants/faq/forum
Yes you can submit additional evidence, you need to make sure that the additional evidence has your wife's name and NI number on each additional page, send any documents to the DWP by recorded delivery and send it to the same address as your PIP form. It may not arrive in time for the assessment in which case make sure you raise it if you have a phone assessment or take a copy with you if you have a face to face assessment.
Have you thought about applying for Power of Attorney; www.gov.uk/power-of-attorney or an appointee for your wife; www.gov.uk/become-appointee-for-someone-claiming-benefits.

Thank you Gary. That is very helpful.
With regards to being an appointee, should I wait until PIP is awarded?

Hi Harry
I would apply to be your wife's appointee now because you can speak on her behalf if you have to challenge the PIP decision. If you haven't already, depending on your wife's current condition, you might want to request a paper-based assessment. You can add that request to the additional information you send in.

Thank you Gary for that helpful advice.
I have telephoned the DWP and requested to be an appointee. I have been told that I will be sent form BF56. I will send additional information and request a paper-based assessment on the grounds of overwhelming psychological distress of a telephone or face to face interview.
Are there any downsides relating to a paper-based assessment or any pitfalls to avoid when submitting more information?
Thank you once again for the guidance provided in this forum.
Kind regards, Harry

Hi Harry
You need to submit as much evidence as possible, have you written a supporting letter stating what help you give your wife and why you give the help? The why is the important part of the supporting letter.
The only downside I can see is that with a paper assessment it is purley based on the evidence you send in, there is no inquisition.
