DWP recent change of address. was created by Twinkle
Hi,
I wonder could someone help me please. My son who is in receipt of ESA (IR) has notified DWP in writing of his move from Scotland to Northern Ireland. He always writes rather than phoning as he find it difficult to communicate via phone. I had on his initial claim put my mobile number down as a means of contact.
I have now received a text message from DWP stating "We need to talk to you about your ESA claim. Please call us straightaway on (telephone number included).

I don't know what to do as my son would prefer to communicate via letter and that way he has a record of everything communicated in relation to his claim. I understood from previously speaking with DWP ESA (as a general enquiry) that his ESA (IR) claim would be transferred automatically over to the Department for Communities and it would be a matter of the DWP starting this process and the Department of Communities sending out a change of address form.

I am stressed over this now and don't know what to do. If I don't contact then are they likely to cancel his claim or will they write to him? Can I phone and ask them to communicate in writing as such? We have done everything correctly, I'm just concerned that someone has received this letter of his change of address and may think it's a new claim for Universal credit that he needs to make which should not be the case.

Advice is appreciated.
Thank you.

Hi Twinkle

Don't ignore the text. I can't say what will happen if you do.

If you and your son could be in the same place, you could make the call to the DWP and explain that you are speaking on his behalf - the call handler will want his confirmation and all your son has to say is "Yes - he wants you to speak' - you could then find out what is going on and you could explain it is your number and ask them to write to him.

If you are not able to be in the same place when the call is made - I think you should try and ring and try and explain that you have had the text message but it is on his notes that the DWP need to write to him. I don't know whether they will take any notice of this call.

Third option is that he could write and tell them about the text messages and that he needs everything in writing - but this might take some time for it to be logged and the information taken on board.
