Appointee was created by Michael
Hi everybody my partners grandson has just turned 18 and has now moved out of his mother's house into his father's home he has various mental illnesses so I telephoned to make a claim for PIP for him but was told he had childhood claim to which his mother was his appointee so they would not let him go any further till his mother had phoned them and removed herself as the appointee. My question is because he is eighteen he should no longer need an appointee because he is capable she was only his appointee because he was a child why should he have to wait for his mother to call to remove herself can he not remove her now he is an adult.

Hi Michael
Your question is outside the scope of the forum - but I've had a look and as far as I can see - as far as the DWP is concerned if someone is appointed an appointee it continues until an arrangement is made for it to stop. So it seems his mother will have to contact them and say that she no longer wants to be his appointee.

Hello Michael
An appointee is not just for a child, I have a 35 year old nephew who has a serious mental illness and although he lives independently, his Mother is his appointee. She will remain his appointee until such times as he is deemed capable of managing his own affairs both financially and medically, which sadly to say, is highly unlikely.
