Hi everyone,
Not sure if this has been asked before or not. I have looked through forum but can't find an answer. My question is when someone first makes a claim to Universal Credit is it mandatory for the claimant to provide a contact phone number. I'm asking for someone else as they suffers from anxiety (diagnosed by a specialist) and they find it very difficult to deal with phone calls especially unexpected calls and as a result don't remember information given or received.

Is it possible to ask for email as preferred method of contact? Will not giving a phone number invalidate the claim? Or can you provide a phone number of a family member as a contact method?

What would your thoughts be on this. Thank you

I'm afraid I haven't completed the UC online form so I can't give a detailed answer, perhaps other members can comment.

So, if the field for the phone number is required then I would expect a valid telephone number; landline or mobile will be required, if it is not then it can be left blank.

You can give someonelse's number but it is not going to be of any value in managing the account as the DWP will not talk to anybody who is not the claimant or their appointee.

You can request contact by email, it's up to the DWP whether they allow it but it won't help with the claim process as the request would be completely separate from this.
