Invitation to Local Jobcentre but in support group

Hello
I have been in the ESA support group for a long time and am also in receipt of PIP as an ongoing award. I am 8 months short of 66 and the state pension.

Yesterday I received an invitation from the local Jobcentreplus to meet someone to discuss possible work opportunities. This would be a no-obligation meeting and would not affect my ESA entitlement. It is also stipulated that I may decline the invitation but also that someone may call me after 2 weeks to see if I have any questions etc. The letter appears to have genuinely good intentions to help me add some type of employment. However, I am perplex as to why the DWP would send such a letter to someone so close to retirement, with benefits awards that indicate I am unlikely to take on a work assignment.

I have never received a letter like this before and am wondering if others have been approached in this way. I intend to decline the invitation but will probably have to negotiate an awkward phone conversation at some point!

Hi Kevin9320, If it's been a long since you were placed in the support group, you may just have been recalled because of this but also a slight possibility of it being because of upcoming retirement age, though that does sound strange.

It will just be a formality and these 'call-ups' do still happen to people in the support group.

You could phone the number on the letter to double check and ask why, which I would probably recommend, or you could just miss the appointment and wait for them to go over it with you afterwards.

Hope this helps

Hi GQ
Hearing that it's just a formality certainly helps. I don't have an appointment as yet - just an invitation to get in touch to make an appointment if I want help from a work coach. There is a phone number and an email address to contact them to discuss what help they can offer etc

Which of these options would be best?

1 call them and politely decline any appointment
2 send an email and politely decline any appointment
3 wait for them to call and then politely decline any appointment
4 any other suggested course of action

Thank you for your helpful response

Hi Kevin9320

It is not an easy answer to call, as greekqueen has stated in her post it could be because you are coming up to retirement age.

The answer to your question would depend on your mental state, you can either do nothing and wait for DWP to contact you, some people cannot wait and will stress out or you can contact DWP to find out why they have contacted and if it is to do with coming up to retirement age, depending on your circumstances you may be entitled to claim Pension Credit with you reach state pension age. www.gov.uk/pension-credit
