Single or joint claim universal credit? was created by mrst
Hi,
My husband has just reached retirement age and now receives his state pension. Our circumstances before this was ... husband received carers allowance for me and topped up with income support, I receive contribution based ESA support group.
My husband cannot claim pension credit because I'm under state retirement age ... what I would like to ask is .. can we or should we claim universal credit? (if so who should claim it?) we have never claimed universal credit before.
I would be grateful for any advice you could give.
Kind regards

Hi mrst
You pose an interesting question, the short answer is that your husband cannot claim UC as he is state pension age, there fore you would have to be the main claimant ..... there is a but
UC is a means tested benefit therefore your income and your husbands income will be taken into consideration to see if your are eligible to claim UC along with any savings, PIP is ignored.
I would advise you to seek help from your local Welfare Rights Orginisation; you can find your local Welfare Rights Organisation to help you with advice by clicking on the link below and putting in your post code, it will then come up with a MAP with a list of agencies. advicelocal.uk
You can also check your entitlement; gov.uk/benefits-calculators

Thank you Mrs T for your comment

Hi Gary, comment Mrs T made my husband and I are in the same situation and I would like to ask it the comment you said is true because every month UC Take our PIP Payment back off us.
After reading this I am wondering if this is the case and if I should be making a call to UC to ask why that the PIPS back from us I have asked them before about it.

Hi terdun9
PIP is ignored for Universal Credit claimants. www.gov.uk/universal-credit
This will not affect any other benefits you’re getting, such as Personal Independence Payment (PIP) or Carer’s Allowance.
