Home Insurance - Unemployed/Retired esa was created by Kris2fer
Hi a bit off topic but,
I am claiming esa / pip long term due to poor health.

I have allways put unemployed due to ill health, but my new home insurance provider admiral wants to put my occupation as retired.

They say being unemployed means I don't have a job but are fit for work and actively looking for work.
Where retired means I am not employed and not looking currently not looking for work.

This kind of makes sense, but I am a long way off 67 retirement age and don't want it to go against me if I ever had to make an insurance claim.

Has anyone else come across this ???
What would you put on any forms ???

Thanks

Hi Kris2fer

You are correct, your question is off piste.

I would agree with you that your are not retired, you could be medically retired. :woohoo:

lets see what forum members think and how they would answer the question. :P

Hello Kris2fer.
Unfortunately I am 'Medically Retired' and generally on my motor vehicle insurance there is never an option for this. You raise an interesting point and you know what insurance companies are like if you give them any 'Wiggle Room' they will wiggle out of any claim if they can. Could you pose your question to someone like the 'Money Saving Expert' perhaps, as I know there are a lot of questions re insurance etc? Not sure this helps but wish you luck in getting some more advice.

Hi Kris2fer,
I don’t know if it helps, but I’m in the same situation except I receive a work pension as well as PIP/ESA after being medically retired due to long term ill health. I am also a long way off state retirement age, and I’m always described as ‘retired’ for such purposes. They usually know your age from your date of birth so there shouldn’t be any assumption that you are older than you are. You may actually be a lower insurance risk if you are classed as retired rather than unemployed. One way you might be able to tell is to get two different online quotes - one where you put unemployed and one where you put retired (hope that makes sense?). Personally I wouldn’t worry about being described as retired. If like me, you will never be able to return to employment, it is the most accurate description of your status. Hope this helps or gives you some reassurance.
Regards,
Mel0308

My husband put "Retired(ill health)" on forms after he was unable to work because of ill health. It certainly made a difference with insurance companies and is the truth. You are not out of work, you are unable to work for medical reasons.

According to the Cambridge Dictionary the definition of retire is: “to leave your job or stop working because of old age or ill health”.
So I would say that “retired” is a more accurate description of your situation than “unemployed”!
