Moving from Statutory Sick Pay to ESA

I've been on SSP since the start of August with sciatica. My SSP is topped up with a bit of Universal Credit. While hoping to recover enough to go back to work (and working towards this) I'm wondering if it's advisable to start a claim for ESA now. If I do, will it have any bearing on the Universal Credit I am currently getting? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Wapkia

Welcome to the forum.

You might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explains where everything is; www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/guides-for-claimants/faq/forum

You cannot claim NS ESA whilst you are in receipt of SSP; www.gov.uk/guidance/new-style-employment-and-support-allowance

Remember UC is a means tested benefit, any income you have coming in will affect your UC, so the answer to your question is yes it will have a bearing on the UC you are currently receiving.
