UC and savings was created by Clara
Please can someone give me advice about reporting savings to UC?
If the money I have goes over £6000 what day of the month should this be reported and how often should it be updated?
What happens if a significant part of this money is saving up for the next block of rent as I have to pay 6 months in advance as I am in not in work.
Is it all the money you have in accounts including money that will be spent in bills that month ? Is there a difference between ‘savings’ and money to live?
As an example if the money I have would be £6,300 and it goes up when UC is paid do I report the change as soon as it hits my account (even though money will be spent in bills?) or is it done on a specific day of the month once a month?
What happens when my balance goes down significantly because I have to pay the 6 monthly rent? I worry on passing this threshold and they will wonder why I have savings. I don’t go anywhere and I’m unable to see family or interact and so I mostly spend on food. For example I haven’t seen a hairdresser in months. I worry about money and so I don’t put the heating on and can’t shower or cook properly so even that spending is lower than average.
My mental health has declined severely does this need to be reported as a health change? I have a PIP review to do also and I am feeling the stress of it every minute of every day. I am having support from a home treatment team but if I report my worsening mental health and that is taken into account I will stress terribly as they might give me money for that in PIP and I don’t want it as I will stress about when I am judged to have significantly improved enough to tell them and I get it wrong so I would rather not have it in the first place if that makes sense.
I have PIP currently because of pain issues and how it affects me and in truth working out whether I am filling the forms in right is giving me panic attacks every single day.
The nurse says I am entitled to it and things haven’t changed enough to report it and when I rang the PIP helpline they said we will be the judge not them and that stressed me even more.

Hi Clara
Welcome to the forum.
You might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explains where everything is; www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/guides-for-claimants/faq/forum
Most means-tested benefits are only paid to people with less than £16,000 in savings (tax credits and the guarantee element of Pension Credit are not affected by this rule).
If you (and your partner) are under Pension Credit age and have total capital over £6,000 then the government assumes you receive £1 per week for every £250 of capital you have above £6,000.
I would advise you to seek help from your local Welfare Rights organisation to help you answer your savings query, they could also help you with your review form; you can find your local Welfare Rights Organisation to help you with advice by clicking on the link below and putting in your post code, it will then come up with a MAP with a list of agencies. advicelocal.uk .
As you are undergoing a PIP review you can explain on the review form the change in your mental health, include any supporting documents when you sent the review form in.
